Active Aging: Embrace Wellness for a Fulfilling Life

Active aging is a lifestyle that emphasizes wellness, and the Sowega Council on Aging (SCOA) encourages seniors to embrace this approach. Studies show that 80% of our lifespan is influenced by lifestyle, not genetics. At SCOA, we offer a range of programs to help seniors achieve wellness in every aspect of their lives. Our goal is not only to add years to your life but to add life to your years.

What is Active Aging?

Active aging is about optimizing physical, emotional, and social health throughout life. It is guided by the International Council on Active Aging’s 7 Dimensions of Wellness, which focus on emotional, intellectual, physical, professional, social, spiritual, and environmental wellness. Each of these dimensions plays a critical role in maintaining health and vitality as we age.

Emotional Wellness

Emotional wellness is key to staying healthy as we age. Managing emotions like stress, joy, and sadness improves our ability to handle life’s ups and downs. At SCOA, we offer memory care programs and emotional support services, such as counseling, art workshops, and volunteer activities that provide seniors with creative outlets to express emotions.

Intellectual Wellness

Staying intellectually engaged is crucial for healthy aging. Activities like learning new skills or solving puzzles stimulate the mind and support cognitive function. SCOA provides programs such as Game Day BINGO and Claris Companion tablet training to help seniors stay mentally sharp and socially connected. Our Aging Mastery Program (AMP) offers a comprehensive approach to intellectual wellness, combining physical and mental exercises for holistic health.

Physical Wellness

Physical activity is a cornerstone of active aging. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that regular exercise reduces the risk of chronic disease and improves mood. SCOA’s fitness programs, including Chair Fitness, Tai Chi, and Yoga, offer seniors low-impact exercises to maintain mobility, strength, and balance.

By participating in these classes, seniors can improve their overall health, recover faster from illness, and reduce the risk of falls.

Social Wellness

Staying socially active is just as important as physical health. Loneliness can lead to depression and other health issues, so strong social connections are essential. SCOA offers numerous opportunities for seniors to engage with others, from fitness classes to volunteer programs. Group activities create a sense of belonging, fostering both social and emotional wellness.

Spiritual Wellness

Spiritual wellness helps seniors find peace and purpose in life. SCOA’s Tai Chi and Yoga classes incorporate mindfulness techniques that promote spiritual well-being. Seniors can also explore their spirituality through creative expression, meditation, and participation in faith-based communities.

Environmental Wellness

Connecting with nature has a range of health benefits, from reducing stress to boosting the immune system. SCOA encourages seniors to spend time outdoors by participating in local Senior Stroll Walking Groups or joining one of our group excursions to scenic destinations. These outings offer not only a chance to experience the beauty of nature but also to strengthen social bonds with others.

Embrace Active Aging at SCOA

At SCOA, we believe in the power of active aging to help seniors live healthier, happier lives. By focusing on the 7 Dimensions of Wellness, seniors can enhance their quality of life and maintain independence as they age.
