SCOA: Empowering Seniors Through Education and Support

The Sowega Council on Aging (SCOA) is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for seniors in Southwest Georgia. Through a range of programs and services, SCOA aims to empower seniors to live independently and thrive in their communities. Among the programs offered by SCOA, several are specifically designed to help seniors manage chronic health conditions. These program are free and may be offered either in-person or virtually at different times. 

Chronic Disease Self-Management Workshop

This workshop provides seniors with practical tools and strategies for managing chronic conditions such as diabetes, arthritis and heart disease. Participants learn about symptom management, goal setting, healthy eating, exercise, communication with healthcare providers and stress management.

Diabetes Self-Management Workshop

For seniors living with diabetes, this workshop offers valuable resources and support to help them effectively manage their condition. Topics covered include blood sugar monitoring, medication management, meal planning, exercise and preventing complications.

Aging Mastery Program Workshop

This comprehensive program covers a wide range of topics relevant to aging well, including health and wellness, financial security, relationships, community engagement and advanced planning. By addressing multiple aspects of aging, participants are empowered to make positive changes in their lives.

Tai-Chi for Arthritis and Falls Prevention

Tai-Chi is a gentle form of exercise that has been shown to improve balance, flexibility, and strength, reducing the risk of falls and injuries among seniors. This program not only helps seniors stay physically active but also promotes relaxation and stress reduction.

Practical Strategies for Seniors
